Green Marine

In 2008, the Port of Québec was one of the founding members of Green Marine, an ambitious environmental program for the maritime industry in Canada and the United States. This program has four main objectives:

  • Encourage maritime enterprises to adopt concrete, measurable actions that go beyond regulatory obligations;
  • Strengthen the environmental performance of the maritime industry through a process of continuous improvement;
  • Build strong relationships with waterway stakeholders;
  • Promote the maritime industry’s activities and environmental benefits.

The Green Marine certification process

The Green Marine certification process is rigorous, transparent, and inclusive. To obtain certification, participants must meet all the requirements of the process, including an annual self-evaluation and external audits by independent auditors.

A total of seven indicators apply to the Port of Québec:

  • Aquatic ecosystems
  • Community relations
  • Waste management
  • Environmental leadership
  • Community impacts
  • Spill prevention
  • Greenhouse gases

The highest industry standards

The Port of Québec displays leadership in its management of environmental and social issues.

Since 2018, the Port of Québec has maintained the highest level (level 5) for each of the applicable indicators. Of all the ports participating in Green Marine, the Port of Québec is the only one to have maintained the highest level for all indicators for six years in a row.
