THE PORT DE QUÉBEC UNVEILS SUSTAINABILE DEVELOPMENT ACTION PLAN
04/16/2014
Québec, April 16, 2014 – The President and CEO of the Québec Port Authority (QPA), Mario Girard, is pleased to announce the QPA’s first-ever sustainable development action plan. The plan is for 2014 and 2015, and represents the first achievement in the sustainable development approach officially adopted by the organization in 2013.
In May 2013, the QPA hired a respected sustainable development firm to help develop and implement a sustainable development approach. The firm did an assessment and benchmarking. From the assessment, it was noted that certain key elements would have to be addressed before a multi-year sustainable development strategy could be developed. The sustainable action plan being announced today is the outgrowth of this work.
The action plan has been discussed with various stakeholders in a number of consultations in recent months, including with members of the QPA’s community relations committee and the Comité de vigilance des activités portuaires, the oversight committee for the Port of Québec’s port activities.
“Integrating the principles of sustainable development in the QPA’s operations is essential to the development of our organization, our place in the community and our continued existence. We are very proud of the action plan. It will make the QPA stronger, more effective and more deeply rooted in it the community than ever before,” stated Mario Girard.
Following this work, the organization set three key objectives to ensure better quality of life for generations both present and future. Associated with these objectives are 16 priority actions, which will allow the organization to lay the groundwork for a progressive and participatory sustainable development approach.
The QPA’s three key objectives are:
- To be recognized by the community for exemplary management of its territory
- To constantly improve its environmental performance everywhere in the Port of Québec
- To develop and maintain a port-city relationship that is respectful of the community
The 16 actions in the action plan can be viewed on our website: 2014–2015 Action Plan (French only).
