Québec, March 11, 2014 – For the first time in its history, the Port of Québec has won the award for “Most Efficient Terminal Operation” of the year by the prestigious Cruise Insight magazine at Cruise Shipping Miami, the biggest conference in the industry. The winner is determined by vote of cruise ship companies, and the Port of Québec won with the likes of other popular destinations such as Belfast, Barcelona and Copenhagen.
“This award is a testament to the collaboration and efforts of our team and partners during cruise operations, and I would like to thank each and every one of them for their contribution,” said Mario Girard, Québec Port Authority President and CEO.
A well-timed cruise forum
The Québec Port Authority, in partnership with Québec City Tourism, recently brought together key actors from the cruise industry to take stock of important progress made in the last several years, identify room for improvement to maintain this strong economic sector in Québec and prioritize actions to set in place to remain an industry leader. This engaging event allowed all cruise industry actors to agree on means to ensure longstanding continued success.
Growth that benefits the region’s economy
Over the years, the Port of Québec has made progress in leaps and bounds, and last year reached a new record with the passage of 103 cruise ships and 164,000 visitors. Embarkation/disembarkation operations have increased by an average of about 20% per year, truly making the Port of Québec the top cruise port on the St. Lawrence River. Cruise ship activities in Québec generate $23M in economic impact yearly and also provide an exceptional international spotlight on this destination.
